What Did it Look Like?

Poke in the Dark

July 26, 2011 at12:30 a.m., he gave out the grin that I have seen so many times before. Yes, I knew what that grin meant. He said, "I am going to bed. Coming up?"

Sitting in the living room, I looked over at our college age daughter.Brittany, seemingly oblivious of her surroundings, her fingers were working overtime at frantic speed, texting on her phone. Then I look at the laptop in front of me, with thousands of email to go through. Oh how I have fallen behind online. Becoming harder and harder to keep up. "No, I need to get through some of my email. Then I will come to bed."

Looking away from her texting, Brittany replies, "Night dad."

Tim gives out that quick look that has become so familiar, trying to make me feel bad for being on the computer so much. But it doesn't work anymore. I am beyond that. Heck, I am now making pennies per hour online. I will go to bed when I am good and ready.

Heading into Darkness

2 a.m., everything is shutdown; Brittany said that she planned on going to bed too.

I walk up the stairs to our room. Closing the door into darkness, I heard Tim wake up. Which he usually does when I get to bed somewhere between 2 and 3 a.m. Most of the time in this short frame of minutes when he has awoken; I hope to fall asleep before the loud snoring begins again. More than often, I am too awake when my head hits the pillow.

This night was no different than any other night. Or so I thought. I got into bed and leaned over for a sweet goodnight kiss. Then he does what all men want to do in a darken bedroom. Ladies you know what I am talking about. After all, it is animal instinct. He rolls over towards me…

So Intense Were the Flashes

I scream out in sheer excruciating pain. Flashes of lightening amongst a black background were all I could see with my right eye. It wasn't just a poke in the eye, it was fast and forceful. Not that it was meant to be, but he called me a baby and said that I poked him in the eye before. So now we were even. Tim said, "Your eye is fine! Go to sleep."

"No, I am not fine." I jumped out of bed and headed towards the bathroom. Hearing in the background, "Don't be a baby. Go back to bed. It is just a poke in the eye."

Looking into the mirror, I could hear Arnold Schwarzenegger's voice echo in my head. "I am the terminator!" In those few minutes, my eye was red. Not bloodshot red, but deep, bright, bloody red. The eyelid and underneath the eye was already swollen. I yelled at him that he really needed to see this. He refused to come to the bathroom. Acting like it was no big deal.

Minutes After the Thumb Attack

You Need to See This!

Brittany came upstairs to the bathroom, took one look at me and yelled out, "Dad, you need to see this!"

As she came nearer, I turned my head towards her. She stopped momentarily and did a queasy movement with her legs on the stairs. Brittany yells out, "Oh gross, mom! It is bulging out. Looks like a huge blood blister. Oh it is so gross!!!"

She finally coaxed him out to see the damage he had done. Then his attitude changed.

The resident doctor at the hospital showed Brittany (who took me there) the scratch above the iris and the large square shaped scratch (as he called it) on the white and clear part of the cornea. He gave me a bottle of eye drops to add every four hours and told me to make an appointment for Friday with the ophthalmologist. (Being Tuesday, this appointment would be a few days away.)

2:40 a.m., (fastest time in and out as an outpatient), got home with not only a painful eye, but now a headache. Delivered the news to my husband, then he went back to sleep. Needless to say, I couldn't sleep.

Every four hours, the drops were placed in my eye. The day progressed, along with the headache and my eye becoming more painful.

Traveling the Eye-Way to Healing

July 27, 2011 at12:15 a.m., my eye was even more red and swollen with white puss. This time Brittany forced me back to the hospital. The workers (with the exception of the resident doctor) were the same people I had seen less than 24 hours prior. I found it funny when the familiar lady at the front desk asked me what was wrong. Then she looked directly at me and said, "Which eye?"

After the doctor consulted with the on call ophthalmologist (same one I hadn't made an appointment with), it was concluded that I was allergic to the eye drops. He told me to see the doctor ASAP and I was sent home with different eye drops along with ointment.

After seeing the ophthalmologist later that afternoon, he said that I had a large scratch and the cornea was torn, not scratched. He also told me that fingernails tend to tear the cornea and are the worse thing that can be poked into one's eye. Not always will the eye heal properly. The eye will become weaken. Ruptures could happen at any time throughout the person's remaining life. He could not give 100% guarantee that this would not happen to me, though assured me that my eye was on the mend.

One week later, my right eye is slightly bloodshot with the deepen red color only below the iris. The eye is no longer scratchy with a small amount of pain and continuing to heal.

The moral of this story is: when sharing a bed with another person, try not to get to close when he or she decides to roll over. Play it safe and wear goggles.

Oh, what a story! I sure hope your eye is healing better now. I'd wear heavy goggles to bed if I were you! Rated Up and Awesome.

Geez! Terrible! Does your husband feel bad at all for what he did? That does not seem justified to me.

I love it when someone can tell a horrible story - and pepper it with laughter to make the reader laugh while at the same time they feel empathy for the writer. Great article - made me laugh - and empathize at the same time... Hope your eye is feeling better...and to dear hubby - you should be treating your wife to a day at the spa - and dinner out! Oh! and more text time on the phone for your daughter who took her to the hospital (yes, I know you probably had to get up for work in the morning, so it made sense for her to drive mom to the hospital - and I say this with all sincerity) - so you owe your daughter a big thanks (text time, ipod downloads...you know :-)

Ouch Sandy. Sorry to hear it. Thanks for sharing this story. Really well written and interesting, and I love the moral. I will let you know tomorrow if my hubby notices if I wear goggles to bed :)

Thanks for the comments. It was an accident on his part. Yes, he had to get up early for work. But I was shocked too on how he acted. Most of the time he is a nice guy :)

Wow. what a story. I had something similar happen, but not nearly as bad as yours. Hope your are healing well. I'll just bet you did consider poking him back. Can't blame you for that. L.O.L.

Wow, what a story! Glad you're doing better. It's not enough that you had the injury, you had to be allergic to the treatment? Maybe you should have paid more attention to that look he gave you. LOL.

What an awful thing to have happen. My cat patted me in the eye and scratched it and that was terrifying enough. I bet you can buy goggles by the gross.

What a miserable experience, Sandy, it seems like our eyes are even more vulnerable to injury than we know. With your experience, you give new meaning to that stupid, phrase: 'better than a poke in the eye' (with a sharp stick). Hope you are all perfect again now.

That's hilarious and it isn't~ I actually got hit with Bob's elbow when I was pregnant. Try explaining THAT one to the doc~ He was having a nightmare about being chased by someone, rolled over and since I was lying practically on top of him, hit me full force with his elbow in my eye. Black eye not to mention nice and red the next day when I went to work - very embarrassing~~ Pokes in the eye are no laughing matter~~~~

Yikes! Our eyes are so vulnerable. If you decide to wear the goggles, then your husband may not be so interested in the late-night romps. Ha!

I sympathize with everyone here who has been poked in the eye. Part of my eye has turned yellow instead of white but I guess that is all part of the healing. Thanks for all the wonderful comments.

Lol Sandy, your hubbie must be one of those quiet tough types. And though this is a dramatic hub the idea of my wife wearing goggles to bed would be funny.

Oooooooh Sandy, I was wincing for you reading this, eyes are such sensitive parts of the body. You managed to make the story funny and entertaining too though, (no mean feat), so well done. I really enjoyed reading this and hope your eye is soon back to normal (don't forget the iced teabags on the eyes, very soothing).

Wow being nudged, bumped or even kicked is one thing, but being gouged is a whole different story. Man would that have woken me up in a hurry. Either get separate twin beds, put up a divider between you two or wear protective gear:0)

This is not a laughing matter, I wonder how many others go through the same things sleeping with partners. I am single, so sleep alone. Is that a good thing? Sigh...lol thanks for the warnings and I hope your eye is healing better now. Next time give him a slap he will never forget. lolllll

Love the adverts this is generating by the way. Already seen two for Health and Safety Courses and one from a legal company who suggest you claim compensation for an eye injury, (can you do that to your own Husband lol?)

I'm so glad I read this! I'm very sorry you hurt your eye though - I was just thinking - goggles? Hmmm how about my own room to ensure this never happens! Lol my husband snores too and I have to fall asleep before him or forget it! Loved this entertaining and informative hub!
