Poetry Contest

Back in the day before my daughter was born, (she is in college now) I wrote a series of short stories for magazines, greeting cards and entered myself in a few poetry contest. None of this made me a fortune. After she was born, I gave up on my writing. Now I’m back on the social network scene hoping someone will read some of my writing.

Getting back on track I entered a contest three separate times for a small publishing company (which I don’t think exist anymore) called Poetry Press. With all three contests that I had entered, they sent me a letter. In this letter is stated that several thousand people participated and they chose the best of the writings. They congratulated me that my poem would be published in their book.

The contest offered cash prizes to the top ten that they picked. Sadly, I wasn’t in the top ten in any of the three books. But I had the privilege of being published and offered a copy. Somewhere I have packed away the other two books. This one I found the other day. It is has a collection of around 250 poets in a book called, “Rhyme and Reason” and I hope you enjoy my poem.

Freedom's Wings

Freedom flew outside my darken place

Glided wings with elegance and grace;

Freedom’s presence seduced my soul

Made existence easier to let go.

My hands reached out toward the stars

Only to touch…icy could steel bars.

And a wall of concrete separates us.

With only time, I will adjust.

Till then, I will wait to fly

On freedom’s wings up high.
