Food Additives That Are Healthy

Food additives that are healthy for you are vitamins and minerals which have been added to baked goods, cereal, yogurt and milk, to name a few.

Breakfast cereals are fortified with a variety of vitamins and minerals. Some food companies claim to have added the daily recommended amount. Most bread and baked goods are made with refined flour that has had B vitamins and iron added. Milk usually contains additional vitamin D. For those who don’t eat dairy products, many people choose calcium fortified foods.

Yogurt contains probiotics, which are live microorganisms thought to be healthy for the host organism. These microorganisms develop when products are fermented. Probiotics are healthy bacteria that grow in our stomach and help keep our digestive system healthy. Prebiotics are the fibers that help support the growth of the probiotics. Food companies will add prebiotics like fructooligosaccharides (an artificial or alternative sweetener) to foods. These healthy bacteria flourish and improve our health. Prebiotics can be added to most any type of food, though yogurt is the most common product this additive is added to.

Food acids are added to enhance flavors in food. And also act as preservatives and antioxidants. Vinegar, citric acid, tartaric acid, malic acid, fumaric acid, lactic acid are all food acids and food additives. These food acids have been known to be beneficial in our health.

Fiber has been added to food products such as cereals and yogurt. Other foods which fiber has been added are breads, pasta, and snack foods. Fiber is necessary for a healthy digestive system and some types of fiber will help reduce cholesterol

Process fish products will often have additional omega-3 fatty acids added. This is needed for normal nervous system function and they're good for your heart.

We all have heard of the bad food additives. Isn't it good to know that there are good food additives which we can benefit from?
