Avoid Kidney Stones

Dietary Therapy For Calcium Disease
Disappointed that my husband wasn’t told which type of kidney stones he had, though he was given a list of things to do and avoid for Calcium Disease. Calcium stones are most common and found more often in men. Calcium oxalate stones account for 90% of kidney stone incidence. Chances are this is the type of stones that he passed.
The doctor would like him to follow all seven of the things list here, but told him to do at least two. Here is the list:
- Drink 2 liters or two quarts (64 oz. = (8) 8 oz glasses) of water every day. If you are active bring it up to 3 liters. The best way to know if your body is taking in the right amount of water is to check your urine. Clear urine shows that you have been drinking enough water. Yellow urine means that you need to more water. Coffee, tea and cola work as diuretics and causes dehydration.
- Drink real lemonade. 1-2 tablespoons per 8 oz. glass of water. Lemon juice contains citrate. This helps to prevent stone formation in the urine. Lemonade bought at restaurants is fountain lemonade that is made with sweeteners and very little lemon juice, if any. If buying frozen concentrate, check the label for what percent of lemon juice is added.
- Limit sodium in the diet. Sodium follows calcium into the urine and increases the risk of stone formation. Consider salt substitutes and avoid salty foods.
- Don’t limit calcium in the diet. Dietary calcium found in diary products and some plant foods. Taking calcium in the natural way according to studies, show that it decreases the risk of stone formation.
- Avoid supplemental calcium. Calcium in vitamin or calcium tablets will increase your risk of stone formation. Some people take calcium to avoid the risk of osteoporosis. If you need to take calcium supplements for any medical condition, always take the tablets with food and never on a empty stomach.
- Limit oxalate in the diet. Oxalate is a by-product of normal food metabolism. Foods high in oxalate increase the risk of stones. High oxalate containing foods include: tea, chocolate, cocoa, nuts, rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries, plums, liver, bran flakes, wheat germ, dark green vegetables and malted alcohol.
- Limit purines in the diet. Purine is a compound found in nucleic acids. When purine is metabolized, it creates a crystalline compound including uric acid, thus increase the risk of kidney stones.. Purine and uric acid is a by-product of protein metabolism. Foods high in purine content include: anchovies, bacon, heat, kidney, liver, scallops, veal, venison, lentils, dried beans, spinach and asparagus. When eating such foods high in purine, drink a glass of water before and after to help reduce the risk of stone formation.
After reading this, my husband said that he would drink more water and lemonade.

Thanks for the informative hub about kidney stones, Sandy. I can see you have done your research. Hope hubby's problems have vanished - for good. :)
I have not heard of the lemonade either, that is interesting. It surprises me that the doc did not mention drinking distilled water. I do not know what kind of stones I have had, but I do know my xrays showed scarring?? Hope your hubby is doing better.
Very good information to help avoid kidney stones. Glad your husband is drinking more water and lemonade. I've recently learned that lemons are an alkaline food rather than an acid. I never would have guessed!
This is a good article about those painful kidney stones, certainly something to avoid if at all possible. Thanks for the information.
Sandy, thanks for adding the prevention information. I think I'll go with the water and change the time of day I take calcium. I was used to taking it before bed to aid sleep. Guess I'll take it after lunch now and hope it doesn't aid sleep.
Excellent hub, I had no idea and I am at my daughters home and what do I see, a lemon tree full of lemons. Guess what I am going to be bus doing...? Thank you for sharing I rate up
Good information here. I as well cannot understand doctors. We still have not determined what my stones were, or are so I am left on my own with this new condition.
What works for me now is, Chanca piedra compound. Also called Stone Breaker at the Whole Foods market. It is a liquid herbal extract-29.6ml bottle. Also my new diet consists of loads of green tea, and AZO Standard, and AZO cranberry. So far I'm doing really well.
Thanks for writing this and, My best wishes, and health to your Husband.
Oh No! Sandy he must stop All carbonate drinks as i have. That means No Cokes, beer, or anything fun. Sorry but thats what my doctor told me.
I haven't had a Coke or a alchoholic beverage in 2 months, very little milk as well.
These are great tips. My husband has had kidney stones a couple of times. They are not fun.
I've heard that this really does help! I have a friend who is a doctor who gets kidney stones and when I pointed these things out to him long ago, he had no idea!
Oh, I have had a recent experience with passing a stone. Let me tell you - it's awful! Thanks for this hub! I was looking for just such a hub to think to mine - now I have one.
Great information.
Interesting info on calcium and kidney stones, Sandyspider. I've heard that passing a kidney stone is really painful, so any tips on how to help them stop forming are very welcome!
Excellent and very informative piece items# 1 & 5 really caught my eye. I'm so glad that you listed #1 - I thought there was something wrong with me that I could not down 8 glasses of water a day. But a friend gave me a heads up to watch the color of my urine to keep tabs on my intake. It is so much easier. Your hub is full of great advice and wonderful tips.
Not cool
Nobody ever told me these remedies, and as I can't stop getting stoned, a little education could have gone far and my less frequency of being stoned [um, was that even english?] [who cares, owe]
Anyways, right side, in bed, crying earlier, pee moved it enough that sharp pain to just tenderness, but refuse tomorrow. Same old sequence commencing!
Sandy, I am for sure printing this hub and not waiting, I am so doing this NOW!
Enough is enough, bless you
