Chocoholic’s Favorite Antioxidant

Dark chocolate has four times as much antioxidant as compared to black tea. Dark chocolate may be higher than a cup of green tea, approximately 42 mg to 50 mg of catechins. Studies have found that dark chocolate had 53.5 mg of catechins (a polyphenolic antioxidant plant metabolite) per 100 gm.

This is good news for chocoholics. Eat your chocolate and be healthy too. Dark chocolate that is and in moderation.

White chocolate, milk chocolate and dark chocolate eaten with milk will be low in antioxidant. Milk may interfere with the absorption of antioxidants from chocolate. Eat a piece of dark chocolate with a glass of water and your body will love you for it.

Antioxidants gobble up free radicals, destructive molecules that are implicated in heart disease and other ailments. Enjoy a piece of dark chocolate a day and it will lower with high blood pressure as well. According to Dirk Taubert, MD, PhD, and colleagues at the University of Cologne, Germany.

What makes this chocolaty, mouth watering ecstasy so healthy? It is the cocoa (or cacao). This ingredient is rich in antioxidant flavonoids. The higher the cocoa content the higher the flavonoids.

Being a confessed chocoholic, I love everything about this smooth, sensual, creamy confection. My problem is I can go on a eating fringy when it comes to chocolate. The key is moderation.

I love milk chocolate, but dark chocolate is good too. Enjoying a small piece of high content cocoa (or cacao) a day for better health is just what this chocoholic ordered.

Hey Sandy, you're making me hungry. LOL.

I like this Hub and I love Dark Chocolate and Cacao. I used to eat the Dark Chocolates in the Hershey's variety pack way back before most people discovered it was good for you. Most people would go for the Milk Chocolate pieces first.

easylearningweb, I love all chocolate. But there is something with the taste of milk chocolate I love the best. But must have more dark chocolate.

Hey Sandy, when I was growing up and there were no sweets in the house, I would mix some sugar into Hershey's Cocoa and eat it with a spoon--was I just desperate or did I sense that dark chocolate was good for me? =:) Thank you for highlighting my favorite food group.

Winsome, I would say you were desperate. Now if you just had the cocoa without the sugar (though very bitter), you would have a healthy snack.

I prefer dark chocolate. I'm wondering how it compares to white tea in antioxidants. If milk is not good to drink with dark chocolate because it does something to the antioxidants, I'm thinking the white tea I usually drink with it might enhance the effect.

I've been trying to ween myself onto dark chocolate as I'd heard about the potential health benefits (rather than its sweeter milkier cousin) but I'm finding it tough. This Hub has gone some way to convincing me that I'm going in the right direction, so thank you Sandy!

Margaret, I am a milk chocolate person too. But dark chocolate is the way to go.

I have read so many good things about chocolate too especially the dark but more than a small bit of chocolate makes my chest hurt. Isn't that weird? It doesn't seem to bother anyone else! I bought a huge bar of the dark and said I would have one block a day and in three or less it was gone and I was moaning! lol

Sandyspider profile image

Sandyspider Hub Author 15 months ago

Pollyannalana, that is strange. I use to get sick after eating chocolate. Thank god I don't any more.

MMMM...yum...interesting hub. I have an unfortunate craving for the milky chocs and find the dark ones too rich for my stomach. I know the higher the cocoa the better it is for you, but still....Divine photos!
